Wrap-around labeling

HERMA labeling machines for cans & all kinds of wrap-around applications

Wraparound labeling for an all-around seamless product

HERMA develops and manufactures labeling machines, including specialized systems for
wrap-around labeling of cans, bottles, ampoules, and all other
cylindrical containers. With this type of labeling, the product is completely or
partially wrapped with the label along its circumference, which is why these are also
referred to as wrap-around labels.

This is in demand wherever the product surface must be used optimally:
An increasing number of legal labeling requirements make it necessary to fit as
much information as possible into a limited space.
Wraparound labeling for cylindrical containers is the ideal solution for this. The
label can be applied precisely over the entire circumference, thereby making
the best possible use of the available space.

This is what matters in wrap-around labeling

  • Precise Application of Wraparound Labels: Even with relatively long wrap-around labels, there must be no spiral misalignment. The label must fit perfectly - without offset!
  • Performance-oriented systems: With many high-volume consumer products or small-format products, high throughput and high speed must be possible.
  • Interesting additional options must be available: Aligned labeling is often required, for example, to optically match the fit of a wrap-around label to an additional lid label.
  • Label handling of different formats and product sizes must proceed smoothly and without major effort for changeovers.
  • Printing of variable data such as batch no. and best-before date must be possible.

HERMA manages to meet these requirements with its wraparound labeling systems:

Most of the settings on our labelers can be made without tools. Easy handling is a challenge that our HERMA wrap-around labelers are happy to take on. Our labeling solutions focus on the essentials and at the same time impress with their amazing performance and high accuracy  when applying wrap-around labels and wrap-around labels.

This is ensured not only by the HERMA 500 applicator used but also by various technologies, such as the roller prism technology of our best-selling HERMA 152C P labeler. At the moment of labeling, a prism sets the product to be labeled in rotation and fixes it at the same time. This almost completely eliminates spiral misalignment. Even aligned labeling succeeds perfectly.

Most settings on our labeling machines can be made without tools. Batch changes are quick and easy. Installing a printing unit, such as a hot-stamping unit or a thermal transfer printer, is also easy—even as a retrofit.

These HERMA solutions are used for your wrap-around labeling:

All-around labeling is indispensable in many industries: for labeling ampoules and vials, in the pharmaceutical industry (e.g., tablet tubes or
inhalers), for labeling cosmetics, household cleaners in
shaped bottles, for confectionery, and for food packaging—from jam in jars to cereal in cans. It is also the right choice for chemical products, cartridges, and many other cylindrical containers. Beverages represent a particularly broad range of applications, as they are typically labeled all around in large quantities by bottle labeling machines or rotary labeling machines.

  • What types of wrap-around labeling are there?

There are essentially two types of wrap-around labeling: partial wrap-around labeling and full wrap-around labeling.
In partial wrap-around labeling, the label is applied only around part of the container’s circumference. The beginning and end of the label do not meet; an area is intentionally left uncovered. This is useful, for example, when a viewing window to the contents needs to remain visible, existing printing or embossing on the container must not be covered, or a container seam needs to be left uncovered.
With full wrap-around labeling, the label encircles the container over its entire 360° circumference. The start and end usually overlap slightly (self-overlap), creating continuous, seamless labeling with no visible transition. This variant offers the largest printable area and is particularly suitable when containers need to be fully designed from every viewing angle.

  • For which products are wrap-around labeling machines suitable?

Wraparound labeling machines are suitable for all cylindrical or round containers whose uniform surface allows the label to be wrapped around them. These include, among others, bottles, cans, jars, cups, tubes, sleeves, ampoules, vials, as well as canisters and buckets. Wraparound labeling is used across a wide range of industries, such as the food and beverage industry, the cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors, and the production of chemical and household goods.

  • Can a wrap-around labeling machine be integrated into existing production lines?

Yes, wrap-around labeling machines can generally be integrated as a module into existing filling and packaging lines. They are connected to upstream and downstream equipment via standardized interfaces and synchronized with the line’s cycle time. Key factors in the integration process include the required labeling capacity (containers per minute), the available space, and the ability to quickly change formats when switching products. For lower production volumes or flexible requirements, semi-automatic or stand-alone solutions are also viable alternatives.
